February Writing Prompt: Week of 02/18

Theme: Memoir and the Personal Essay

Let’s talk about siblings.

I have a younger sister, who I’m very close to, as well as an adopted younger brother. I have tried many times to speak about both of them in various writing projects, but find it difficult to convey who they are on the page.

I’m curious if my love and my oldest child’s desire to always protect them has inhibited me to write about them…or I just haven’t found the right story to tell?

Do you have similar experiences? Let’s explore this together.

For this writing exercise, explore where you and your siblings are today and the choices that brought you there. Would you like to trade places with your sibling? Would you be happy living in their shoes? How have your personal choices differed over the years?

February Writing Prompt: Week of 02/04

Theme: Memoir and the Personal Essay

For week one, I’m going to hit you hard.

I want you to write about something that happened in your life, or a choice you made, that you are embarrassed by. Write about the gory details, the shame, the guilt, the thought processes that led to this event, chain of events or choice.

It’s going to be tough, but remember, you aren’t going to share this with anyone unless you want to. And if you want to, you have the safe space of our community forum where fellow tribe members can comment or critique if that is what you are looking for.

The purpose of this exercise is to get you writing about emotions or life circumstances that are uncomfortable. As writers, often times are creative juices begin flowing when we are put in a state of discomfort.

Push through it and see what happens on the page.
