“It’s hard to be told to lighten up because if you lighten up any more, you’re going to float the fuck away.”
Bad Feminist was the first collection of essays I ever read. I picked it up because I wanted to know more about what this word “feminism” really meant as well as wanting to understand this “essay” genre I was so unfamiliar with.
Looking back, I know I made the right choice. Mixing personal narrative with criticism on the culture was completely foreign to me. But I absolutely loved it. I love how I got to know more about Roxane and understand important issues like “rape culture,” a phase I was also unfamiliar with.
Obviously, this book taught me a lot. I’m itching to reread it as its been about three years now. I’ve changed so much as a person and a woman, and I feel this book will speak me in an entirely different, but equally as important way.
Have you read this book or anything else by Roxane Gay?
