This month we will be focusing on non-fiction and the autobiographical. To me, memoir is such an important genre because it allows us to tell our story. As humans, story telling is in our blood. It allows us to connect with one another, find commonality and form a type of kinship. Memoir and personal essays join us in conversation with one another and validate that we all have something to say.
I also chose this theme because it is a genre I recently started connecting with. I always thought I would be a fiction writer, but upon discovering personal essays, I found myself wanting to create my own. A lot of fiction I wrote dealt with real-life issues that I was trying to fictionalize in order to fit in the genre. Personal essays have allowed me to explore parts of my own life, in a truthful and lyrical manner.
Throughout February, we will be discussing what makes memoir work, how to know what to write about, and the power of nonfiction.
Also, continue to check this space as I will be posting examples of memoir and personal essay throughout the month to learn from and discuss.
