This is such a unique and special collection to me. I was having trouble writing an essay that dealt with a difficult subject matter. It wasn’t coming out right and I didn’t know where I was going wrong.
At the time, I was taking a personal essay workshop and this collection was recommended. After seeing what so many amazing writers had done, how they had crafted their essays in the second person and it worked brilliantly, I decided to try it out.
Rewriting my essay this way unlocked something within me and the words flowed so smoothly, I was also in shock after. I had never written in the second person before and I never went into writing an essay about my father thinking I would do so. But it worked and I'm very proud of it.
I highly recommend both trying out this form of narration if you are stuck, as well as checking out this anthology. Kim Adrian’s “Questionnaire for My Grandfather,” had me shook for days.
